We definitely have it here is Missouri. It sucks but Georgia had Ad Valorem which is the same but different, they both suck.

One thing I found weird when I moved to Mo is the fact that you have to pay all of the sales tax at once when you buy a vehicle. Every other state I've lived in rolled the sales tax into the financing. The first vehicle I bought here was a brand new Tahoe so when I had to pony up over $3000 to the tag office in order to get plates, I was surprised to say the least.

Oklahoma doesn't have property tax on vehicles. I can't remember for sure, its been so long, but I don't think New Mexico does either.

Any info on any of the states not already mentioned? There hasn't been mention of the mountain west states, Alaska or Hawaii or some of the more populated states like California, Illinois, Florida etc. Here's what we have so far. Thanks.

Places without property tax on vehicles:
Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Indiana, Delaware, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee.

Places with property tax on vehicles:
Kansas, Missouri, West Virginia, Nebraska, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, Nevada, Georgia, New Hampshire, Kentucky.

26/50 states accounted for so far, let's get all 50 so we have a comprehensive list.

Is this tax always on a state level? I always assumed that Richmond, VA's vehicle property tax came from the city itself.

You're right. It is a local tax, but every city and county in the state levies it. So if you're a VA resident, you're paying a personal property tax on your car to your city or county. This is why former Governor Jim Gilmore had such a hard time trying to eliminate the car tax, as it's not a state tax but a local one. When the taxes were reduced by state legislation, the state had to reimburse the local governments for the lost revenue.

Not exactly true. Indiana doesn't call it a personal property tax, but it does levy a vehicle excise tax when you renew your tags. I paid nearly $500 in vehicle excise taxes for my two newer vehicles last year.
