What cities would you say have changed their essential CHARACTER so dramatically in the past 20-30 years that they're like new cities?

I can think of Portland and Austin as examples. in 1970 both were fairly conservative towns, but now they're known as being liberal and artsy. I heard Asheville is also a hippie enclave now. What other examples can you think of? Any examples of the opposite, where a city has gone from liberal to very conservative? Also in terms of demographics, but with more of a focus on the city's main core relating to industry, politics, population etc.

Why does it have to always be liberal vs conservative and vice versa?

Pittsburgh comes to mind first. Orlando, Raleigh, and Charleston, SC are good candidates here too.

How has SF truly reinvented itself? I mean it's always seemed to be what it is now.

+1. Completely different in almost every way than in the 70s or 80s.

Charlotte has not "re-invented" Itself. It just grew beyond crazy. There is a difference between re-invention and just absurd poorly managed growth.
