I'm sure somewhere in the south takes the crown- Unfortunately, I haven't really taken a bite throughout the region yet. New Orleans has some of the best food nationwide, and the chicken I had impressed me beyond words. I love the south when it comes to food.

Newark takes the crown for the north east. Je's soulfood is AMAZING. Queen Latifah is known to pop around there whenever she's in town. Good stuff.

Give me fried chicken with South Carolina mustard-based BBQ sauce any day of the week.

Or any kind of chicken from a Churrascaria...best food ever.

KFC can't touch some of the home recipes in Kentucky.
The difference with KFC original recipe is they pressure-fry. It's not the recipe but the method, and I always loved how tender and flavorful their chicken is, or used to be. I looked into buying a pressure fryer, but they don't sell them anymore except for $3K industrial models!

But, yeah, for regular fried chicken there's no doubt a southern state would have the best (besides what we can all do at home with a cast iron skillet). In fact, for fried chicken any competition elsewhere likely carries a tradition transplanted from the South, so the South is really competing with the South anyway. Oh, and the winner would have to be a buttermilk marinated version.

Although it's probably a southern city and not Chicago, I'd just like the mention that Harold's Chicken Shack is delicious.
