You are a Yankee. Growing up in Michigan I never thought of myself as a Yankee until I lived down South. A Northerner or Midwesterner yes, but not a Yankee, that was someone in the North East.
Guess now I am a Yankee.

Heck in the NOrtheast we call all those Southerners REDNECKS.. LOL

Wow this is amazing. I guess everyone has there own view but I moved to SC in 1994 and it was the best decision I ever made. My whole family lives here now brothers and everything. We all love it here and have never had any issues with anyone. In the 12 years that I've been here I have met many other people from the north that moved down here and none of them have ever said they had any issues with people and none of them would ever move back up north. They are from various states (NY,NJ,PA,WI,MI,VT). Ok the south isnt for everyone but that doesn't make it a bad place.

All it's all screwed up.
They call West Virginian's Hillbilly's, but we all know Michigan'ers hold that title.
In West Virginia, they just call it "family"

Thumbs down Go back, please

Let’s see: we're redneck, back-stabbing, rude, phony, bible-thumpers, ultra-conservative, neo-con, right wing, politically incorrect, racist, mean-spirited, corporate whores, put up with over-priced, shi**y construction, and are gossips, jerks, judgmental, overly religious, love cults, cliques, clans, and THE Klan, plus corrupt, a Wal-Mart nation, with no identity, have crap food, are unwholesome, and dishonest.

What a mean-spirited, ignorant rant.

Nothing wrong w/the redneck, or politically incorrect parts...
Don't agree w/the racist, mean-spirited(whatever that means?), or THE Klan parts...
But the rest I would have to say pretty much hits the nail on the head...
Though I would add...'illegal-immigrant loving'

I can completely understand how a non-southerner moving south wouldn't like it. That makes total sense to me.

But after reading this thread, I'm really amused by how little y'all understand southern culture. It's like all these people packed up and moved south with NO idea of what it was like, with the most absurd expectations.

For example, if you are offended by being called a "yankee", then you will be very unhappy. And for those of you that think the contemparary use of "yankee" is referring to the Civil War, you have a lot to learn about the south.

here are some sure-fire signs that you don't understand about the south:

Myth: You think southerners are 'all rednecks'.
Truth: Even the most educated southerners 'play dumb'. Popular media in New York and Los Angeles have forever associated the southern accent with stupidity.

Myth: You think the south is stuck in the civil war.
Truth: The Civil War affected the south far, far more than any other region. We never recovered economically. So, it has great historical signifigance to us. But, that's as far as it goes. We don't dislike Yankees because of a war, we dislike (urban) yankees because they offend us in so many different ways. In most cases, it's completely unintentional; but that doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Myth: You think the south built all those new housing developments for southerners to live in.
Truth: Chances are, that subdivision used to be a soybean or cotton field. Most southerners don't like these subdivisions - except developers. No one is forcing you to live in those places. My old neighborhoods (middle-class Columbia, SC & Sumter, SC) had huge oak trees, sidewalks, and houses built in the 1920's.

Myth: You think 'people don't like me because I don't go to church'.
Truth: You can believe whatever you want to believe. I study Buddhism and haven't been to church in 7 years. Nobody has said a word.

Myth: You think southerners are racist/bigoted
Truth: Most half-educated southerners realize that our "race issue" is actually a "cultural issue" that goes back to the days of slavery. We are comfortable with that, it's the rest of the country that walks on eggshells about things. I think "the N word" is just another expletive. Offensive? Yes. Racist? No. Outside the political arena, southern blacks and whites get along fine.

Myth: You think southerners are uneducated / dumb / slow
Truth: From my perspective, Yankees talk and talk and talk and talk. Just because we're terse doesn't mean we aren't perceptive.

Myth: <insert words here> the KKK <insert words here>
Truth: I'm pretty sure that any reference to the Klan automatically invokes Godwin's Law. I usually quit reading if someone starts talking about the Klan, because they are just making stuff up at that point. The KKK, for all practical purposes, does not exist.

Myth: Southerners are all right-wing, and politically religious
Truth: Most white southerners are Republican, and most black southerners are Democrat. Neither are very liberal, both are fairly religious. But most people don't vote because of religion. Common priorities are: decreased government regulation, low taxes, strong national defense. In the political arena, various versions of Egalitarianism take a backseat to libertarianism.

y'all get the idea.

Default Moved from FLA to NJ and back Again!

In Sept of 04 my husband, 1 yr and 9wk old moved from South Florida to NJ. My husband quickly got a very good job up there , good pay with good benefits, but the housing prices, coupled with property taxes and cost of living afforded us no spending money.
Our quality of life, coupled with shorter days and cold weather was really taking a toll on us.
We decided to move back, only to find the housing market in So Florida had gone through the roof and we could no longer even come close to affording the townhome we had sold only 7 mos prior!

It was quite a struggle for a while but the good weather made up for a lot of it. My husband got an equally good job down here and now his company is transferring people to GA and we are toying with the idea of moving there.

Even though its a better fit for us than NJ, South Florida is crowded, the school systems are terrible (2nd from the bottom in the nation) and crime is rampant.

I would love to raise my family in a quaint town where they can play outside without fear of being abducted. Where the weather is moderate but we still get to enjoy and experience seasons. From everything I've read about GA (Alpharetta in particular) it seems perfect for us but I have had this "grass is greener" syndrome before so we will move much more slowly this time.

LOVING? Do you really think that the illegal immigrant problem is confined to the south? That there is some imaginary boundary? Please!
