I used to be able to make it on $8.00 an hour when I was in my 20's. I now make $12.00 an hour (still pretty low, I know) and I am lucky to be renting from a relative or I would be homeless.
I don't know how anyone makes it on less than 35K a year. If I find something for $455.00 a month, that is still 35% of my net pay. *rant over*
The rent can be cheap in small towns, but unfortunately, there are few jobs there as well. I lived in a tiny town until about 4 years ago and paid only $300/month for a fairly nice quiet one bedroom apartment. When I moved to a bigger town, the best I could do was about $700/month unless I wanted to live in a really trashy fleabag for around $550. Those places had lots of methheads and other assorted addicts.
Yeah its tough out here for those of us on minimum wage. I was looking for apartments in certain neighborhoods in Chicago a couple of sites(craiglist being one) for studios or 1br and something under $500 in a decent neighborhood is almost non existent. My plan is to save up enough money to last me for at least 5-6 months before I make the move(hoping by the end of this year). I'm 21 btw
It may be necessary to go the roommate route. That way you save on cable, utilites, as well as rent. The landlord may be able to tell you if prospective roomie has been a stable renter.

Cape Coral used to be expensive. With the housing market in turmoil, I think rent has come down in many places.
I'm having a tough time finding a renter for a nice 2 bd, 2 bath on 1/2 acre in Lehigh for $750. Just remodeled too.
People say this and that about Lehigh. I like it...its like being in the country but you aren't.

Yeah but the problem is the closets aren't available. Why so skeptical about a roommate? Maybe it is abnormal in FL but that is the social attitude there, other areas of the country and culture people live w/ their families roommates gfs etc... no shame in that.

They are available, I just can't afford them. It is hard to live on 24K a year. I'm not skeptical about a roommate, it's just not something I want to do. I am in my 40's and very private and introverted. And I think it would be hard to find a "roomie" in my age group.
