Hello. so a little about me: i am a 22 year old female from a small town near montpelier, vt. I am ready to get outta here and am looking for a little advice as to what cities might be a good fit for me. I am interested in living in a place that is big on local/organic food such as farmers markgets and co-ops/whole foods stores. I would like to have warm weather and sunshine the majority of the time, however could definitely deal with short mild winters and some snow. I am also interested in alternative medicine, arts and crafts, local shops (the less chain stores the better), live music and nightlife, and am looking to take classes at some point. good public transportation would be ideal, also being able to walk places would be good too. safe would be good too. easy access to a lake/ocean and shopping and hiking and other outdoor activities are definitely something i want. relatively low cost of living would be ideal too. some cities ive been told to consider thus far are: austin, tempe/phoenix, flagstaff/sedona areas, asheville. any and all advice/opinions are welcome thanks!
Santa Fe NM, Athens GA and Carrboro NC might work too. I'd dare say that most of the place that are serious in terms of what you are looking for outside of weather tend to be in the NE, MW and out West in places like Ithaca and New Paltz in NY, Burklington in your state, Ann Arbor MI, Madison WI, Boulder CO, Berkeley CA, Portland OR and perhaps Iowa City IA, among some others.

Sounds like Austin to me. While there is no city IMO that fits all of your criteria. Austin sounds like the best to me. Austin may be behind in public transit. But it's a decent walkable city especially in it's core and around UT.
Flagstaff is awesome! It will also have the nicest summers of any of the places you listed. Coming from Vermont, you might be in for a shock as far as the long hot summers in Phoenix, Austin, etc...
Incidentally I've been to Vermont and it was amazing! Very similar "feel" to Flagstaff. I don't know if you want too much similarity, though, but I thought I'd just say that for reference.
Also, everywhere in Arizona is very, very sunny, so that's a positive. If you look at a sun map of the US, there's a bright red spot right over AZ and nothing like it anywhere else.
Unfortunately, Flagstaff and Sedona are not cheap, at least not in comparison to the low wages that prevail there.
