Hey, my best friend & i are taking a roadtrip across the lower usa. We are a couple of young guys who are interested in things that are weird/unique, roadside attractions, 1950s related stuff ... And even more mainstream stuff if its cool/interesting.
We plan to definately go through Vegas, Roswell, San Antonio, Austin, New Orleans ... If you have any suggestions for things to see there or anywhere else thats worth a stop along the way that are worth a stop we'd appreciate the suggestions. Thanks, Waco
You can tour a battleship and submarine in Mobile if that interest you. USS ALABAMA BATTLESHIP
Near Tallahassee you can visit Wakulla Springs where 'Creature from the Black Lagoon', and some of the old 'Tarzan' movies were filmed. You can take a glass bottom boat tour of the springs. Welcome to Florida State Parks
Baton Rouge has a WWII battleship docked downtown when you cross into the city. They tour it and its pretty cool. New Orleans has the National WWII museum along with the FQ of course.
Here in San Diego we have the USS Midway museum docked right on the downtown waterfront. If Naval history is your thing, this would be awesome to see! It is an aircraft carrier that was used in WWII and has a long history in both the Navy and San Diego. You actually get to tour the inside of the ship as well as the air deck where the jets are.
Mobile has the U.S.S. Alabama battleship you can tour, along with French-style architecture(people too often forget that it was heavy settled by French settlers, along with New Orleans). Biloxi has several casinos, and the brewery that makes Shiner Bock is only 20 miles south of I-10 inbetween San Antonio and Houston(would love to know if they do any tours).
If you have a passport, you can cross the border from El Paso into Ciudad Juarez, and see some really cool Mexican markets where many merchants sell various things. Not sure if the drug cartel violence has made it too dangerous to travel there anymore, it'd be sad if it did, since that was one of the highlights(by far) of a workcamp trip I did with my church in 2000.
You gotta eat at Lambert's Cafe in Foley, AL. Make sure to starve yourself first because the portion sizes are enormous! It's all the Southern-style food you can eat, and it comes with "throwed rolls" too! Once your rolls are throwed to you, a server will come around with buckets full of apple butter and sorghum molasses if you want some. They also have some servers who have buckets full of other stuff like fried potatoes, black-eyed peas, etc. And be sure to buy something from the souvenir stand too!
When you get into Alabama, pass through Mobile and over Mobile Bay, and take Exit 44 onto AL 59 southbound to Foley. Lambert's Cafe is on the left somewhere near U.S. 98.

1. Go through Silver City, NM, and spend a little time on the forest road in the National Forest north of town.
2. Fort Davis and Alpine Texas, southeast of El Paso.
3. Bypass Houston to the south, through Freeport, Galveston, and the Port Bolivar ferry.
4. US 90, through New Iberia, Morgan City and Raceland LA, staying on the old road through the towns as much as you can.
5. Mobile is a beautiful city. Instead of following the freeway through, go up I-65 to exit 4, and go through on Dauphin St if it's not rush hour.
Basically, if you stay off the Interstate, you'll see plenty more unique things than we could possibly mention here. On the interstate, you'll see nothing.
2. Fort Davis and Alpine Texas, southeast of El Paso.
I've also read pretty good things about Marfa, so I would also suggest that to the original TC. I'm sure Fort Davis is also a nice town, but if I could ever get out to that part of western Texas, I would choose to see both Alpine and Marfa....
