We all know there's an overabundance of threads on here of senseless city-bashing. I figured this could be a thread where we list what impressed us in cities we've recently lived in and maybe post a few pics to illustrate what we love about them. Express the redeeming qualities in all cities that people don't take into account. And for those of us who like to travel a lot like myself a way to look for more good things in cities.
I moved with my family to Cleveland, OH (actually an inner suburb that borders it
) from Phoenix, AZ (A reverse trend, more people seem to be moving from there to Phoenix lol.) Just to go down a list of things I like here:
-The actual ethnic neighborhoods like a Little Italy, Slavic Village, Little Lebanon people who live there have been bred for generations with their own street festivals, etc.
-The Playhouse Square (I actually didn't know it was second largest theater center behind NY), the world class museums are free to the public, the Orchestra(one of the "Big Five" they're amazing live),other stuff. For such a small city it has amenities with the quality found in much larger cities with higher costs of living.
-I didn't know I would take so well to four seasons,I love them. Northeast Ohio is forested so in the fall it's stunning to look at. Winter is awesome for sledding and skiing in your own backyard. The seasons help set the scene and and the crazy inconsistency in weather helps make it more exciting to me.
-Being from the South and West I also wasn't used to having a large body of water nearby. I really enjoy the lake, especially in the summer at the beaches, jet skiing, boating, Lake Erie islands.
-Regional diversity. An hour in one direction takes you to the best amusement park in the world (Cedar Point), an hour in one direction takes you to Amish country,an hour in one direction takes you to the Cuyahoga National Valley.
-The traffic here is almost nonexistent!
-Northeast Ohio was settled by Connecticut so it has Northeastern charm. Pre-war streetcar burbs with the New England houses in the trees are walkable and look great.
-People here in general are extremely friendly and down to earth. The people are loyal and less transient.
-Cleveland is circled by a system of parks and reservations in its inner burbs and it suits the seasons(hiking in fall, sledding in winter)
-Some of the best things/areas of Cleveland aren't in the city itself but in the outlying areas. I like how that prompts people from all corners of the metro to explore and get to know the whole area.
-Amazing food, nationally respected dining city.The West Side Market is called the best food market in the country and it's my favorite place.
-The cost of living is one of the lowest. I really like how Cleveland is more than just a city to most people, it's a solid hometown.
