Height, style, proportion. You need to balance all of these aspects.
The original question related to quality of life and economic vitality, not just monuments and delusions of grandeur.

Asia is amazing right now with skyscrapers flying up all over the shant and the Beijing Olympic stadiums look amazing, but I don't think that Asia is way in front of USA with many new approved buildings that are as good as any Asian skyscrapers, there also seems to be a lot of projects and developments going on throughout the US over the next yrs which will change the skyline of many cities.
As for Hong Kong although it looks good at night with the different lights I still don't think its a patch on New York.

comparison
how can american cities be compared to shanghai and chinese cities? in asia there is mind blowing corruption and wide gap betweeb rich/poor , people in shanghai pull rickshaws and labor conditions r bad(standard of living) , bad air , pollution , injustice , etc...
i come from india. new delhi and mumbai are nothing. people r frustrated . everybody wants to come to america!
how can anything be possibly compared to america? economy is not everything , i know people in my country(india) r socially going backwards! people complain about police britality in usa , well go to india and see!!! hellhole!
one person i know(indian origin) was working in Tokyo and after few months she back back to america saying people were racist!!!
america still has oppurtunities. u can study , become what u want. i don't think money is everything . in india people have too much black money but there life is not easy.

i am saying this coz i have seen india . there is simply no comparison . yes you have malls, buildings ,etc but the corruption is disgusting! in mumbai train blasts doctors were charging $400(bribes) to release dead bodies to their relatives!!!
traffic is a nightmare!!! nyc traffic is clean and organized when compared to other cities of asia.
you have quality if life in usa .it's all relative.americans will complain that nyc is dirty but those coming from mumbai will say it's so clean.

As for the parks. Haha, good luck getting out of NYC in 5-10 minutes. More like 45 minutes. When it comes to the areas inside the city, there are some decent parks like Central Park/Battery. However the bulk of parks are concrete playgrounds, usually in terrible condition. Especually once you leave the wealthy areas of Manhattan.
And storms, a decent Hurricane would flood lower Manhattan and make Far Rockaway and Coney Island disappear. Also flood subways and low laying areas. A very strong Hurricane would flood much of southern Queens and Brooklyn. It has happened in the past.
Tokyo for example has pretty much solved that problem. They bult a network of giant tunnels that litterally swallow the storm surge.
NYC is doing nothing to solve this very real problem. The only answer is evacuation, which is going to be a disaster when it does happen.
Earthquakes. An earthquake would destroy the city. With the amount of old construction in this city, it would be a real disaster. There have been a recent spike in small earthquakes in the northeast. This I am not too concerned about although it could happen.

OK OK OK let me jump in here way later than this story ever took place but if ya'l do get this and yes i said ya'l so im from the south so yes i like TRADITION something i guess a new yorker wouldnt know.. anyhow my mom is from PA so when i went back to see the grandparents last aug. i made first trip to NYC... WOW... thats all i can say i took amtrak in the morn with my girl left on amtrak that nigh and in one day i saw statue, ground zero, central park, and walked back down to grand central walking thru time square... in one day, and rode the subway to get back and forth til walking back down for the last hour or more... got some amazing food (of any sort may i add, somthing probably not gonna happen in hong kong, yuck to imagine,)anyway and yes the tradition that it was one of like the first two of major skylines, and central park isnt much!!!! ha how bout for the fact it used to be a swamp you jack A...!! ha build much of a park much less one of the biggest skylines ever on it.. i mean look at what all that metal and concrete is sitting on... i mean thats why when i got there and acutally saw it with my own two eyes, i instantly feel in love.. and im well traveled ive seen big citys but nothing like this my friend... so be proud of what that, you, are sitting on, anyhow... main thing overall: moneywise, moviewise, smartwise, popularitywise, if you want a city with a skyline overall from front to back on what it is its el numero uno... oh and dont ya think if way over half of those buildings werent built oh say forever ago when all the dudes still had to climb that high to build it dont you think theyd have so many huge arsh buildings there now,, i mean foreal dude, use your head, thats why chinatown has so many and so many that are prob on avg. yes taller,,, hmm maybe cuz we was actually smarter in another category and had dem furst...

All japanese cities have a fraction of the crime rate of US cities. All japanese cities have way more developed mass transit systems. Japan has the best train system in the world actually.

Shouldn't the poll just have non-American cities, from your question?
