Well Los Angeles is expecting a few new NFL teams in 2016 so things are definitely on the rise out here on an overall level.
And to be honest i think Los Angeles should make some of the events international, The Grammys or Oscars in Paris or London for once.
1. Have been hearing that since the middle of the Clinton administration, haha!
2. You do realize the Grammys are the English-speaking awards show, concentrating primarily on local industry (AKA, Hollywood), right? As with all these award shows, it's about boosting sales. The rest is a smokescreen.
The problem is the industry, it focuses on los angeles, many live in Los Angeles and most do not want to leave Los Angeles for just one night to receive an Oscar or go to a gala event, are flying hours, and many have commitments in Los Angeles the next day.
Los Angeles is the center of the entertainment industry, has a nearly endless selection of venues, 5 major airports, a media infrastructure and ready-to-go event capability equaled only by New York, and year-long perfect weather. And a metro population over 18 million.
I can probably dig up a few more reasons, but if you want to know why things aren't done in Vegas very often, look up the 2007 NBA all-star game....

I think Vegas more than holds it's own... And I think you may be a bit misinformed.
Just goes to show that LV is far more prepared to hold a major event than LA is.
Way more hotel rooms, more sunshine, less rainfall, etc.
When you look at the population vs. visitor numbers, you can see that vegas draws in just as many people... Yet the city is 1/9 the population of LA. This translates to "LA can succeed with many industries... While LV is nothing if it isn't entertaining outsiders"
We know how to put on an event because we wouldn't exist without being able to do so... Considering 43% of our workforce is in the tourism/visitor industries.

It's a 1 way street really. The tourism numbers for LV would be nothing without the 18 million people living right next door.
LA gets nothing in return from LV residents, so, you're welcome.

.
Las Vegas has miserable weather compared to Los Angeles.
