Minnesota wins hands-down. I think Michigan as a whole is a prettier state with all of the great lakes and the little lakes to boot. Plus, the land in much of Michigan is a bit hillier with more trees. But, the cities of Michigan are very undesirable except for perhaps Ann Arbor. I thought Grand Rapids was clean but very boring. And, the rest, well, I think Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Saginaw, and the rest kind of speak for themselves.
For Minnesota, I thought Minn-St.Paul was a very nice area and Deluth (sp) was nice but I am not to familiar with any others. That whole southeast corner of Michigan is dreadful with all of the suburban sprawl.

The big industrial areas of Michigan do drag it down, no doubt about it. That is one of the things the State is burdened with now.So much rusting infrastructure, and , dawdling tax base to keep it going. maybe they should just sell off the UP , say , to MN. ( Wi is too cheap to buy anything). It might bring the much needed cash to bail out Detroit, and the like............

I sat on my deck this morning with my dog watching the steam roll off little Bay de Noc. When I finally took her down to the beach we were treated to the site of a crane standing stock still in shallow water. I dont know about large Michigan cities because I think Detroit is closer to NY than it is to Gladstone. If I get in my car I can drive and in less than 1/2 hour be deep into the Hiawatha national forest.

Then again, MN might have a wider variety of landscapes. The southwest hilly grasslands by Marshall and south along Buffalo Ridge (where the giant wind farms live) is very different from the southest around Red Wing, those are very different from the the Brainerd Lakes area, and all are very different from the hilly country in the arrowhead and along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Red Wing (southeast MN)
Brainerd Lakes (central MN)
North Shore (northeastern MN)

Having lived in both states, I have to agree that Michigan is much more beautiful in general than Minnesota, but the cities in Michigan cannot come close to competing with the cities in Minnesota economicly and livability wise.

[quote=Steve-o;1740204]Nice pics, but MI has all that and more. IMO Michigan is vastly more beautiful than Minnesota.
Yeah, but... Detroit... And the... Lions...
Besides, I just grabbed defined pics off Wikipedia. I didn't do much searching. But I've also been to Michigan, and I'm not sure I can seriously argue.

Since the weather and geography are similar, its Minnesota by far: its more progressive, the economy is better, and the cities are cleaner. Michigan is run down with loss of jobs and a declining population. Personally, I would prefer Wisconsin to either one of these states.
