Retirement is approaching and we're looking for location recommendations near metropolitan areas in NC and VA. Affordability is a big factor as well as good health care, safety, cultural activities, restaurant variety and natural beauty. We're definitely not into extreme-sports, but we do enjoy the outdoors, particularly good walking trails. No interest in golf, by the way. Concerning affordability, we're hoping for a single-family home of around 2000 square feet, in the price range of $250,000-300,000. We'd love to get feedback from other 50- and 60-something adults who have found "their place" and are loving it. Thanks in advance.
Im looking into the Raleigh area. Im originally from Massachusetts and want to retire on the East Coast. I am 61. There are a number of suburbs for me to investigate as possible locales. There definitely is the medical care and restaurants in the Raleigh area, and access to the ocean and mountains in the state. I understand there is an extensive greenway and that is very important to me. I feel the crime would be less than Charlotte. I live in Portland, Or and Im very tired of the high crime and the reasons for it here. Raleigh would be a vast improvement. As far as other Metro's in NC its Charlotte or the Triad area Greensboro. Wilmington I hear is rather expensive, and would be to distant from cities for me as well as prone to hurricanes.
Well Im just looking at the moment but Im closer to a decision than I have been, and thats an improvement for me.

You pretty much described the Durham-Chapel Hill, NC area.
There are two world-class medical facilities there, Duke University Medical Center and the UNC Hospitals. It's quite safe for the most part. The universities pull in a considerable amount of cultural events. The population is very well educated. The area's restaurant scene exceeds cities that are several times larger. There are plenty of housing options in your price range as well. Check it out. I think Chapel Hill in particular would suit you well. Good luck!
Roanoke/Salem Va area is mentioned frequently in the retirement magazines and places rated lists.
