Michigan, Wisconsin or Indiana. These midwestern states all are un-pretentious and down to earth. The cost of living is low, and if you have a job supporting yourself is very easy. People who work at Walmart own homes in this part of America. In the small town I live in decent houses can be had for 50k- 90k depending on size. Jobs are not the easiest to come by however, but if you are persistant you should be able to find one. Cities to look at: Indianapolis, Milwalkee, Green Bay, Traverse City, Grand Rapids.

I'd say this is pretty true. They know what they are, and they love it. I like that!
The locals think way to highly of themselves and of the City. Very difficult for outsiders.transplants to break into the local cliques.
Well I could totally see that. I've heard that a lot about St. Louis. A lot of very old families there, but I think if a person is likeable and has a good personality, they can make the most of anywhere they live.
The least pretentious cities are the ones you haven't heard about. I'm not going to tell people the ones around my neck of the woods because once you invite the herd the place tends to become 100x more pretentious. Sorry, but not interested.
I think this is a great question...I moved to Daytona Beach exactly for this reason!
Nobody here cares if it's Tiffany's or Target! (It's about your attitude instead) Motorheads tend to be the flashiest thing I see around here.
Other places I looked at and visited were Gainesville, FL, Asheville NC, Portland OR, Vancouver BC, Flagstaff, AZ, Eureka CA and Brattleboro VT. All great places too!
I decided I needed to be near the beach and warm weather.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your roots. Again, I'm sorry you couldn't make friends in St. Louis, but suck it up man. It's not St Louisians that are the problem. It was you and your sour eletist attitude.
