I love New York and Toronto! I love the fact that you can walk basically anywhere without having to take the subway or bus if you live in the downtown area.

I love the hipster trends, trendy shops, urban culture, and multiculturalism.

I love that they have a "little india", "little italy", "Greenwich village", "queen st", "little jamaica", "little greek town", ect..., all within the city.

I would love to live in New York but it's just to expensive rent wise for me. What other cities are similar to this and not spread out like LA or San Francisco and are affordable?

Boston reminds me of Toronto, especially if you include Cambridge.

just save your money.
you're not going to get the feeling you'd get in NY or Toronto outside of NY or Toronto.

chicago has its own vibe, IMO. there are other nice cities in the u.s. such as chicago, sf, dc, etc. but they each have their own vibe. COL could be an issue with some of the cities ppl will name in this thread, tho.

sadly, no.

but out of curiosity, how much would you be willing to spend per month on rent? would you be willing to have a roommate?
have you started applying to jobs outside of the city/state that you live in?

i wouldn't move anywhere without a job offer on the table, to be honest.

*edit*
you should add jersey city to your list. the proximity to nyc is very close. their commute to manhattan is a lot shorter than some ppl in some parts of some boroughs and the rent is cheaper.

Trendy areas are, by definition, expensive. Demand drives up the price. If you want a comparatively affordable, trendy, inner-city apartment, you should look at Philly. The city has its problems, but it’s the most affordable city for urban neighborhoods with decent transportation and great cultural amenities on the East Coast.

Philadelphia has different ethnic neighborhoods, smaller of course than NY City and maybe grittier than Toronto, but likely your best bet.

Pittsburgh and Baltimore have strong neighborhoods, but public transit has some odd gaps in both.

If you need to economize further, how about Buffalo?
