I've read that there are counties in central New Jersey where some of the residents commute to NYC and some to Philly.
Presumably, the same situation exists in Maryland, with some people in the same county commutjng to DC and others to Baltimore.
What are some actual examples of these sort of counties?

It's like that in almost every county in CT. In Hartford county there are people that commute to Hartford itself, but also New Haven (New Haven County), Springfield (Hampden County), and some to NYC. There are people in Windham County CT that commute to Hartford, Providence, and Worcester. It's very common here.

I have many friends from Howard County, MD who have one parent commute to Baltimore and another commute to DC everyday.

Same thing for the Princeton, NJ area: One parent goes to Philly, the other goes to NYC/further-north Jersey.

Yes, in Central and even Southern NJ (Mercer/Burlington/Somerset/Middlesex/Hunterdon/Monmouth) counties people commute to New York and Philadelphia. Also a very few trickle to Delaware (I did it for two weeks).

People in Durham County, NC and Wake County, NC (Raleigh) commute to each other's county though they are actually the core counties of two different MSAs that happen to be next to each other.

In Upstate NY, Genesee and Orleans counties have people that commute to Buffalo and Rochester. It occurs with counties in between smaller cities too.

Anaheim (3 professional sports teams) and Santa Ana could be considered Major cities. In Orange County people commute all over the place. And into LA or San Diego
