i don't think people in the south are more religious than northerners. they just talk about it more (if they're christian). all in all, i think people generally practice their religion to the same degree regardless of their location.
As a life long Southerner it's been my experience folks aren't necessarily going to church for the religion......one would probably have a better chance of getting laid at the baptist church than a dive bar. There's generally not a lot of small talk or even a greeting when you run into a member of your congregation Saturday night at the liquor store but come Sunday morning it's like "Hi Bob, how are you?", "How's the wife and kids?" "Those (insert any SEC team) played a heck of a game yesterday".
