If you flew into one city and you wanted to be within driving distance to many other cities what city or cities would that be?

Strange question. Before we can answer, what do you consider "driving distance?" I can drive across the country if I need to, so technically San Diego is driving distance from New England.

If you're like me, and consider driving distance to be 2-3.5 hours (essentially comfortable to do a round trip in one day and still have some time in between), I would say Philadelphia would be high up on the list as would New York City. within a 3.5 hour drive from New York City, you can get to Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and if you're willing to drive 4 hours, you can get to Washington DC. This doesn't even include the smaller cities of Providence, Scranton, New Haven, Hartford, Stamford, Sprinfield (MA), Newark (NJ and DE), Wilmington, Trenton, Atlantic City, etc that are within that range.

Philadelphia is similar. You can easily get form Philadelphia to New York, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and a bunch of smaller cities (many of them listed within driving distance of NYC) within a few hours by car.

If this is what you meant by "driving distance" than New York City and Philly get my vote.

This is one of the apects of east coast that I really miss elsewhere in the country: being able to drive to another interesting place. But of course, no other part of the country is a densely populated as Wash-Bos.
There is nothing however like good old Europe where you can go through three different countries on a single tank of gas
