From the posts in this thread. It basically comes down to the threadstarter asking a very broad question. Not very specific on what he is looking for in an answer.
I'll admit Miami is much different than either Atl or Houston given its location and culture but I fail to see how Houston trumps Atlanta for a vacation for the poster? Both have PLENTY to do, whether you want bars, clubs, or day-time attractions so please explain instead of just saying Houston is better. Even though MARTA is limited its still an improvement over Houston's pitifull metrorail.
Except for better rail and subway, there is nothing you can find in Atlanta that you won't find in Houston. I promise you.

Atlanta is a happening city-in Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead. I do not think Houston has more to offer- I think it offers something comparable or less. Atlanta dominates its region and is a capital while Houston is rivaled by Dallas just in Texas alone!
Houston only rivals Dallas in a few ways. Atlanta has suitable activities for a city of its magnitude, but Houston is much bigger with much more to do and a wider variety to do because it has more cultures.

I may end up in Houston and I think I would enjoy it but the poster wanting to see the South, Atlanta should be his destination. It is where the old South and the new South meets and has a rich history that trumps Houston.
I agree that Atlanta is a better definition of the South. But both Miami and Houston have their own histories. ATL and HOU are about the same age, actually.
Austin. It has a good music scene and natural beauty.
