Because New York is not in the MIDdle of the states on the Atlantic coast, that's why it's not a mid-Atlantic state.
Sometimes we can be soooo literal, without regard to historical roots. If we don't know the reasons for something being labeled what it is, then let's just make up one.

What "LauraC" fails to realize is, New York is in fact in the middle. Atlantic Canada was also taken into account when they mapped the coastline.
Therefor, at least south-eastern NY is Mid-Atlantic, easily.
Same as how the Mason-Dixon was measured as the middle of the north American continent, not just the colonies.

Never thought about it that way but in this regard Philadelphia by far the closest major city to the Mason-Dixon line - in fact lies only 10-15 miles north of the Mason-Dixon line; in that regard may be the Middle city so to speak

NY and Philly are NE not MA cities.
Mid atlantic=not good enough to be in the NE and not culturally rich enough to be the south.
Basically a dumping ground.

Oh...."Not good enough to be in the NE".
New York City & Philadelphia have always been Mid-Atlantic to me. Virginia is iffy, I usually say the Mid-Atlantic ends at Virginia Beach but the consensus seems to be NoVa. The Hampton Roads area is declared Southern on City-Data which was news to me being that it never gave me that vibe (however Richmond is the South yet further North than VB), VA is difficult. Either way it ends somewhere in Virginia and it starts in SW Connecticut (north)/Eastern Long Island (east).

People like you give north-easterners a bad reputation. I'm sick of that attitude as people like me get lumped in with it!
NYC is not the mid-atlantic.
It is the northeast, as is Philly.
If we went by your definition, we would have only Boston as a major northeast city, and that would be laughable for such a recognized area like the northeast.
You can tell NY and Philly and BOS are northeast cities because they really have their own culturally identity, strong, they have that intensity, originality, and fast paced NE accent.
Once you cross the mason-dixon line, and get into Bal-Was...you are in the mid-atlantic.
Basically as I said a dumping ground of sprawl, that is totally unoriginal and a culturally wasteland.
Once you hit Richmond, you are finally south, where again you have originality, culture, and accents, along with a slow, laid back, friendly approach.
I take it as ignorance and insult when NY and Philly are lumped in with DC.
Please.
DC has nothing but sterile 8 story building in a sprawled out, ugly landscape that wishes it has the tradition and culture of the NE or south.
