Which state(s) would you prefer to live in based on the following criteria:
Culture
Natural beauty
Geographic diversity
Cities
Small towns
K-12 school quality overall
College/university quality overall
Friendliness/politeness of people
Politics
Job market/economy
Other factors, decided by you
I chose the Southern-tier states closest to the population median because, culturally, I believe these states have enough similarities to make some interesting comparisons.
Source: List of U.S. states and territories by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Population as of 2010 Census:
23 Alabama 4,779,736
24 South Carolina 4,625,364
25 Louisiana 4,533,372
26 Kentucky 4,339,367
27 Oregon3,831,074 (sorry, it didn't make sense to include Oregon)
28 Oklahoma 3,751,351
I personally voted for Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma. I will explain later.

I don't know enough about the other states but I like Louisiana because the amount of sideshow metro areas, cultures, small towns, the state and 4-year colleges and/or universities in each corner of the state, people are great, I love scenery that's pretty much unique to Louisiana, the foods, the Creoles and Cajuns, you can get to a metro area in one our in all directions, proximity to Texas, and all the gulf states.
I do think Alabama and Oklahoma are good too. Alabama has Birmingham, Huntsville, and a coastal industry. Oklahoma, not too sure but Tulsa and Oklahoma City seem impressive, but I've never been.

By the way, for anyone voting, "Shoot, let meh git mah chew'n baccy" is for anyone who dislikes (and mocks out of dislike for) these states.

For me, it was a VERY hard decision between Alabama and South Carolina. Alabama won out for personal reasons (I was born there and have family that still reside there). Not only the personal, but the Gulf beaches are soo much better than the Atlantic IMO. Birmingham is a beautiful city topographically speaking.
In South Carolina's defense, I'll always love Charleston. Hilton Head is a cool hangout spot too (when I lived in Savannah and wanted a quick little trip out of town without actually going "out of town").

Natural Beauty: Kentucky wins this although Alabama is not too far behind.
Culture: South Louisiana.
Can't really say for education as all these States are greatly lacking in this area
Overall I choose: Shoot, let meh git mah chew'n baccy. There are about 40 other states that are so much better than these five.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Exactly what I always tell folks thinking about moving...you won't like it here, so stay and make it work where you're at.

Do you tell people what you tell them just to keep them out? Or, do you really concur that there are about 40 other states that are so much better?
