Question Leaving NYC but to WHERE?? HELP

My boyfriend and I are trying to get out of NYC. We can move anywhere but I don't know where to start; please offer me some ideas!

Looking for:

Somewhere warm (even extreme heat is fine)
Lower cost of living than NYC
Don't know if this is too specific, but as we're both moving into healthcare, maybe somewhere with good hospital system?
Not California (it's a licensing thing)

While I'm sick of the cost of NYC I still love city life and would prefer to move to a city (or maybe v. large college town). I know the word "city" can be a little relative but somewhere with a lot of variation in what there is to do. I do not want a "city" that is more like suburban sprawl. I'd prefer somewhere that isn't totally homogenous; I like a mix of people, lifestyles, politics etc. That said, I am totally open to any places that have even a few of these things, as well as places you particularly liked living in, whatever the reason.

I appreciate any advice you can give, even just to narrow it down to where I don't want to be. Anything! Thank you!!!

You cant really have city life that is urban and dense and have it be warm and not in California and must stick to the east coast/southwest. Some of these things are not mutually compatible. You could try Miami maybe because that it is a city but much of Florida is not urban it is very suburban. I don't know anywhere in the southwest that would fit your description, pretty much all the cities there are less urban and more suburban. The Texan cities might give you some urbanity but still they generally are very car-oriented suburban centric, but they do offer a low COL. You could try places like Pittsburgh, which is still city-like and nearby but it has a lower cost of living compared to NYC. I don't know if Pittsburgh is a big medical place, I know Boston is but that is very expensive too. Maybe you can even look up at upstate New York such as Buffalo, which has a lower COL than NYC but I am not sure if it is that much lower. Last I heard Buffalo and other upstate NY cities have very reasonable COL.

Thanks for your advice. I edited my original post - I am open to a mix of those things. If I can go anywhere, maybe should be more open minded. Just looking for a place to live that's interesting and vibrant.

Cleveland meets all of your requirements except the warm part (although it isn't any colder than NYC). The cost of living there is great, it is not homogenous, it is an older city with a nice core that is on the rise, two renowned hospitals (Cleveland Clinic, UH) lots of culture and amenities. I really think a New Yorker like you would love it there.

I see that you are studying French/Sociology and grew up in Switzerland. This might sound crazy, but what about Plattsburgh? Actually, it's hospital seems to be hiring and it is very close to Montreal. So, you can go there on the weekend and I would suggest getting an enhanced drivers license, if you moved there. It is close to the Adirondacks and you can still make trips to NYC, as well as put your French to good use. Weather will probably be the con to the move considering the criteria though. Burlington Vermont might also work too.

given your requirements, I think Miami is your only real option.

Do you mean the Nurse Licensure Compact?

Well say goodbye to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, West Virginia and Nevada then.
