I'm a bit surprised by some if the responses. I've spent time in many states throughout the country including 20 years in LA. The absolute worst tailgating I've ever seen is in Portland Oregon. To the person who mentioned Missouri-no way, I've spent time in Fenton, Charleston, Manchester and driving there is WAY better than in Oregon. When you talk about Oregon you might as well mention Washington be ause it's the same thing. Organ drivers are supposed to be polite because they don't honk but they tailgate as aggressively as I can imagine and its not because of road rage-it's merely pure stupidity.

In Chicago they make it pretty clear when you are getting in the way, In Minnesota ive seen alot of people over react when they are being tailgated and slam on the breaks

When I was driving from TN to WA, the worst tailgaters I saw by far were in Indiana. I thought they were bad in TN, but they don't hold a candle to Indiana drivers. Otherwise the Indiana drivers didn't seem especially bad, they just tailgated a LOT. Kentucky seemed about like TN. Hard to say about Illinois, because I basically only went through Chicago, and it was rush hour so you would expect some tailgating. But even in that traffic the drivers didn't seem especially tailgate-happy. Wisconsin, Minnesota, S Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, I didn't see any tailgaters in those states. I mean not even once. Of course, I also never got into any real traffic driving through those states. I also experienced very little traffic driving across Washington until I reached Seattle, and I found the drivers there pretty slow, extremely polite (people pausing to let you change lanes, using turn signals, etc), and no tailgating that I can remember. I haven't needed to own a car in Bellingham, but from what little I've driven here in Uhaul trucks (I've moved once since arriving), I didn't experience any tailgaters.

I hate Western Washington drivers, they tailgate mercilessly and only just to get in front of you because as soon as they pass, they slow down to how fast you were just going.

Maybe none of them tailgated me because I was in a Uhaul? I honestly don't recall a single tailgater when I drove through Seattle. I was astonished at how polite the drivers were, being used to TN drivers. Everyone used their signals when changing lanes, if I needed to change lanes they'd let me, etc. It was a very welcome thing considering I was driving in pretty heavy traffic through an unfamiliar city. They were quite slow, but that doesn't bother me.

That is nothing like what I have experienced and I've lived here for 2 1/2 years I have just come to believe that turn signals seem like their optional when sold in Washington lol I also feel like I'm going into combat everytime I have to merge.

It seems strange that our experiences could be polar opposites. One of the first things I noticed was all the turn signal use. My brother was with me when we drove through and we were both amazed at how most drivers signaled when changing lanes. In TN we were amazed when anyone used a signal, it was so rare. But I only drove through Seattle that one time, so maybe I just got lucky. I've had more time to observe drivers in Bellingham than Seattle, of course, and I can say that they are infinitely better than TN drivers. I certainly still see the occasional moron, but for the most part it's like a completely different world from what I was used to. Almost no tailgating, plenty of turn signal use, very little horn honking or angry people spinning their tires, they actually stop to let me cross the street on foot, less speeding, don't try to kill me if I'm riding my bike, etc.

I'll vote for Colorado. Just got nailed making a right turn during a snowstorm last Wednesday. The idiot was so close to my bumper that I couldn't see his headlights. He had a 4-wheel drive pickup so he was invincible. 4-wheel drive doesn't mean 4-wheel stop on black ice. After the accident the idiot tells me I'd signaled too late. NO- ITS BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T SEE MY SIGNAL LIGHTS MORNON!!
