You need to state more of what you want in a city. I know it's a pain to think about, but what type of nightlife, what type of jobs, what type of young professional community, etc.
I'll say this. Nashville has a pretty good vibe, lots of healthcare related jobs. The nightlife is pretty good. It has a good white collar job network as well.
Phoenix on the other hand is a MUCH bigger city. Lots of pro sports. More variety in activities (I think). The nightlife is more varied simply because Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe is so much bigger. Downtown Scottsdale in my opinion blows away anything in Nashville.
Phoenix has a small amount of white collar workers though particularly with regards to its giant population so there is a higher percentage of white collar young professionals in Nashville and concentrated in a smaller geographic area.
I prefer Phoenix because it is a major major city, but I like the desert, downtown Scottsdale, and the variety of things to do in a major city like that.
I'm from Indy, so I think Nashville is ALOT closer to what I'm used to as far as weather, landscape, and overall living. I don't really put bars and such as a must, but just overall things to do around the city would be nice. Phoenix is home to a couple of my favorite sports teams in the Cardinals and Diamondbacks, and I have always wanted to make it out that way...but we'll see.

Relocating to be closest to your favorite sports franchises might not be one of the better components for your methodology. Just sayin..

I'd like to say I'm more rational than that, but one of the reasons I want to go to Wash U in STL next year for law school is because of the Cardinals…
I'm lucky it also happens to be a really good school.
