400 miles isn't far enough away..It has to be far enough away to be a place most Bostonians haven't been to. It seems like every Tom Dick and Harry has been through Buffalo, on the way to Niagara.
I saw numerous vehicles with Massachusetts plates driving around northern Michigan last week.
Yeah, Indianapolis is a definite contender. You're the 2nd or third person to have suggested that city. The only drawback is a few people I know moved from there to Boston, so I wonder if there's too much reciprocity between the two areas.
What about Gary, IN and Detroit, MI?
Columbus is another place that's been on my radar. It's a big city that doesn't seem to garner much fanfare yet I've never heard anything bad about it.
It's unlikely there is reciprocity in the sense you are thinking, just a coincidence that you know some people. Colombus, Ohio really surprised my with what a full-fledged urban downtown it has. From what I gather it's also a liberal oasis in a conservative state, not sure if that's good or bad.
I've thought about Detroit, but you really need to have the pioneer mentality at this point to consider such a move. Detroit is still hurting, just a big gamble.

It's odd that many people don't know much about Columbus but yet when I was in Columbus the locals act as if it was THE big city in Ohio and the Midwest for that matter, and if you go an hour without hearing from somebody how great Columbus is it'll be a small miracle! To me, this was VERY interesting!
When I first read the title of the thread, Phoenix was the first city that immediately popped into mind, but the weather and number of transplants disqualifies it. Oh well...but maybe Albuquerque perhaps?
