I am from Birmingham, AL and I doubt the person would have the same experience anywhere around here. (Unless they have a disagreeable personality to begin with).
Go to Community College. If you have as high of a GPA as you say, you should qaulify for some assistance and then get out!
I have lived in all the regions of the USA and let me tell you, you are going to exerience people with predjudices (gay, religious, race etc) everywhere... Not just in the south.

The worst part is this.
I have tried to date out and the guys here have heavily discouraged me from it. One girl I asked out said yes but then after getting ridiculed in public by a lot of her friends and even her family she had to leave.
Then I hear on the internet all these dudes from my background whining about getting girls. Swear this place has haunted me like that.

First of all, don't be discouraged by the uninformed on this site that say this could happen anywhere. It doesn't. My guess is the posters telling you this are by-and-large young white boys living in majority white neighborhoods and attending (or attended) majority white schools. The kind of prejudice you are encountering is much more common in less enlightened and less diverse areas.
That said, don't fret about the short term. You've been given some solid advice. If you can't get into or can't afford an out-of-state school right now, a year of two in Alabama will be bearable if you focus on the prize: getting to a location where you will be happier. Even if you start in a local community college, you will already find yourself in a better environment filled with folks have the gumption and intelligence to want to better themselves. After proving yourself there for a year or two, many more options will be available.
Best of luck

I'd kick their asses. I detest people who make fun of others they deem to be superior too, but I find almost everyone does it in one way or another, even people who are supposedly good people, and especially when they are in groups.. they get cocky and bold and do things they wouldn't do alone. Plus they are only in high school.. people do mature as they age. Barring kicking their asses, move. If you have a car, all it takes it the cost of gas and maybe $2000 in money to get started somewhere else, to find a place to rent, and find a job... though admittedly the employment situation isn't the best in many areas.
Make sure to go to school for a job that is in demand, such as a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist. Don't waste good money not knowing exactly what field you will go into. College is a big waste of money for a liberal arts degree. The difference between a person who stays put where they are and one that thrives moving all over the place is attitude. Nothing more. Anyone can up and move to a new area, but not so many have the courage to do that alone. Similarly, the difference between the employed and unemployed, is largely determination and persistence. It really doesn't take much money to live, either, when single without kids that is.
It's only my job at 3M that keeps me where I'm at. Otherwise this area is flat, with not enough state parks and scenic areas, and has too long of winters for my taste. But I'll honestly probably never get laid off from this job, it's that resistant to economic collapse. I'm already too far up the seniority ladder at 3.5 years in (lots of people got hired when it opened in the early 70's and are in the process of retiring after being there 35 years)

Then you would be very wrong. Need I remind you of the swimming pool incident last year in your very metro?

No, I'm not wrong. I never said prejudice doesn't exist elsewhere. I said this:

I have no interest in whether you concur with my assessment or not. Unlike some posters, I'm more interested in offering the OP some useful advice and support than in promoting my opinions. He can decide if I've succeeded or not.

Don't know much about Alabama...
But in terms of California, oh helllllllllllllnnnnnnnnnahhhhhhh!!!!
I grew up in small (relatively speaking) Southern town and moved to California and have been living here ever since...
I can't WAIT to get outta this god-forsaken place and go visit my old home town!
