I was wondering if there are any suburban municipalities in the country which have large populations (say 500,000+). As far as I know, in this country only cities have very large populations, while the suburbs are severely fragmented. Looking at a map, you have Philly with 1.5mil people in 135 sq. mi, while across the river in South Jersey, it takes around 100 towns to reach the same population. Has a large scale suburban town under one local government ever been attempted in the U.S.? Is such a thing even feasible?
Location: northern Vermont - previously NM, WA, & MA

There are outskirking cities of LA and the Bay Area with big 6 figure populations that are always debated whether they are suburbs or their own principal cities. I'd rather not duke it out, although Anaheim is undeniably suburban.

Are we going to stay away from defining a suburb? We've done that before.
Long Beach is more a city in its own right than a suburb. It even has it's own suburbs (Lakewood, Signal Hill, and to a lesser extent Bellflower and Paramount).

I don't feel like arguing what makes a suburb. See the post you quoted.
