I'm looking to move to a more bohemian place on the East Coast, and wanted to ask for insight from those more travelled than me. I'm looking for a place (city, neighborhood, or district) with: independent cinemas, independent quirky coffeeshops, cheaper rents, vintage clothing stores, old houses, low crime, artists, and a laid-back, friendly vibe.

I spent a year in Cincinnati, and loved the Gaslight District, and Northside, so something like that would be great, but on a bigger scale.

I know there are cities like Portland and San Francisco where this culture is the whole city, but I'm not ready to move that far from family (in DC) just yet and would love it if you guys could recommend me some places back East. Some friends have told me about Williamsburg Bk, West Philly, and Baltimore, but I wanted to get some more opinions. Thanks!!

Ithaca, New Paltz, Center Square and Delaware Ave. in Albany, Westcott and University in Syracuse, the neighborhoods in the SE Quarter of Rochester(especially Park Ave., Swillburg and SouthWedge) and Allentown, Elmwood Village and the Hertel Ave. area of North Park in Buffalo in terms of Upstate NY. Perhaps Downtown Troy and the Union Street area of Schenectady too. Saratoga Springs might work too.
