*note: I have ruled out New England and the west coast due to cost.
1) I like down-to-earth people
2) I prefer cooler weather (but weather is not a deal-breaker for me)
3) I need cheap rent
4) I work full-time and would need to continue to do so (office work)
5) Couldn't care less about schools (I have no children), nightclubs, beaches, shopping or fine dining
6) I like simple things - festivals, picnics, bowling, movies, hiking, nature, etc....
7) I am not beautiful, and would not be comfortable in a city where the women are beautiful (but I'm not ugly). I am "low maintenance" (little makeup, no designer clothes, etc).
8) I am an older single.
9) I am not uber-religious, but I do consider myself a Christian. I like going to church.
You shouldn't have ruled out the west coast, because there's a town in the Mojave Desert in CA that fits pretty well (except for the cooler weather part). Yes, it's cheap.
Come here to Wisconsin. The majority of women are fat. Too much beer, bratwurst and cheese.
For all the stereotyping, Wisconsin is NOT one of the fattest states. Wisconsin is about the outdoors, running, biking, snowshoeing and skating. If you wanna go fat jokes...try the south...or Vegas...or Chicago IL which has held the title of fattest city in Mens Health magazine!

Not all of New England is expensive, Northern areas in the Merrimack Valley(up til the lake region of NH), and Western Areas through the Berks, and Greens.
Sounds like the Midwest to me. Some cities to look at...
Fargo, ND
Sioux Falls, SD
Pierre, SD
Duluth, MN
Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
Rochester, MN
Eau Claire, WI
Madison, WI
Milwaukee, WI
Omaha, NE
Des Moines, IA
Cedar Rapids, IA
Iowa City, IA
Davenport, IA
Champaign-Urbana, IL
Peoria, IL
Kansas City, MO
St. Louis, MO
And I suppose Chicago, too, if you find a cheaper neighborhood.

I have never lived there, but when I visited, I didn't notice particulary overweight people (in WI). I thought the men and women were quite attractive, actually . Clear skin, rosey-cheeked, etc. Must be that fresh air and nice weather.....
