I walked around the parking lot at my motel in Rapid City SD one night, and counted plates from 36 states.
I saw a Hawaii plate in Kansas City. I saw a St. Pierre et Miquelon plate in Nova Scotia, not that far away, but I think there are only about 500 cars in SPM. A few years ago I saw a Yukon plate in south Texas.
I saw a New Brunswick plate in El Salvador, Central America, and a Missouri plate in Panama, and a Newfoundland plate in North Dakota, all on my own car. It's easy to find Canadian plates in Central America. Somebody tried to steal the Newfoundland plate off my car while parked in Baltimore, but a shopkeeper ran him off. I drove my own car in Iran with a France plate.
Here in Cape Cod, there really aren't many out of state plates at all other than states like RI and NH that are really close by. The farthest I see outside of the Northeast every now and then are FL, MI, and OH.
When I'm in the Charlotte area, there's a bit more variety than New England. The ones I see most often that are outside of the South are NY, OH, and IL.
I've seen lots of Alaska plates here and even a few Hawaii plates. When I lived in Montana the plates that was toughest to spot were Delaware and District of Columbia.
