Arrow New graduate looking to get out of Raleigh!

In a year I will be done with School (NC State) and looking for a place to work. My problem is, is that I've always lived in Raleigh/Cary and I have this motivation to leave, even though there is nothing wrong with the location. I love being a few hours to the beach and the mountains, the people are all and all friendly, but for some reason unknown to me I want away.

I am a civil engineer, so I really believe that I could find a lot of jobs for me around the country wherever. I have been interested in the west coast, but my whole problem there is it is sooo expensive to live. On the other hand a city like houston or charlotte is much cheaper to live and therefore tempting as well.

What do you guys/gals recommend? Where are you all located right now and how much do you like it?

How do these places compare to central NC? As far as people, things to do, and safety?

Portland
Houston
Sacramento
San Francisco
Philidelphia
Pittsburgh
Austin

Seriously I have no boundaries except for the 48 central states. It would be nice to be within 30 miles of a big city for work purposes, but that's it.
