We are a happily married couple (in our 30s) and parents of 6 awesome kids, 5 daughters & a son (18yrs-3yrs). We are both AZ natives and all our children have been born here.
We are ready for a change! We love Tucson & all the people here but we want a change. We want to be able to raise our kids in the "country". We LOVE the country, water (that we can put our boat on without having to drive hours to enjoy), we want to live where we can enjoy all 4 seasons. We want to live where it is green and where our kids can play outside and enjoy the wildlife! We are also tired of the extreme heat here and want out of the "desert". We feel as though Tucson is really a dead end street for us. Even with an education here the pay is very low. My husband is a plumber & I am an office manager with a degree in business.
And speaking of education, our schools here are not very good let alone great. We have our children in some of the higher ranking schools and it doesnt seem to the education we were looking for or that it is promised to be.
We are worried if we jsut continue to stay here then our children will be "stuck" here too. So we feel we need to make a move and not look back. We are ready to sell our house and leave AZ and start a life in another state.
We have done some traveling but not to too many different states, CA, NM, NV for family vacations in the summer. We have researched CO & WA and like things about both states. CO seems like it is a lot like AZ but with snow. Still semi-desert and pay is low, not as low as Tucson though. We looked at Colorado Springs in CO and have researched Bellingham, Spokane, 9 Mile Falls, & a few other cities in WA state. We fell in love with Bellingham and would love to visit and see if it is a fit for us. We are worried about the "depression" everyone talks about with WA.
So has anyone been in the same situation? And if so where have you tried? Is it worth packing up your family & leaving the only state you have ever lived trying to find a better life? Or does anyone just have any ideas they would like to share? All of your input is greatly appreciated!

be careful.....will your kids resent being yanked out of school, losing their local friends, having to start over?.....are you sure you can find all you want in the next place?.....

sounds like things are kinda OK right here.....both working.....you know the area.....year-round recreation nearby.....I know the school thing could be better locally....don't forget there are so many who would love to live here (see other threads!).....

just my idea....I don't want you to make a mistake with a big family and all that....low-cost of living here compared to other places.....can you move within Tucson to a better school district?....

Our kids are actually looking forward to the move and to starting over =)
They are exciting to be in a clean country area. We actually have decided on Spokane, WA. We are making our move early next year. Thank you for your input =)
Have a great night!

Upstate NY would probably work, but that might be too far of a move. There are plenty of small/rural communities that would fit what you are looking for.

If you're concerned about lack of sun, Spokane is definitely a better choice than Bellingham, WA. Eastern WA gets plenty of sunshine (and snow). Spokane also has easy access to some very awesome recreation. Priest Lake in Northern Idaho is one of the nicest lakes I've seen anywhere, Coure d'Alene is nice too, and good skiing nearby.
