I've been to many major cities and I haven't found any of them to be particularly safe. Forgetting about crime rates, which cities would you feel the safest living in?

San Diego is said to have a low crime rate for it's size. It's crime rate is comparable to a city in Japan, Western Europe, Australia, or Canada rather than a lot of U.S. cities (especially ones like Detroit, D.C., New Orleans, Atlanta, etc.). There actually hasn't been a single comfirmed homicide in the entire month of August.

New York is very safe considering its size.

I've always thought of Denver, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, and even San Francisco as being pretty safe. Every city in the US has crime, every city has its good areas and bad areas. As long as you mind your own business and stay away from bad areas you should be fine anywhere.

City-Data's own lists:

Top 100 LEAST-Safest Cities pop. 5,000+

And yeah, D.C. has decreased dramatically in crime over the past decade. It's gentrifying a lot of old run down neighborhoods and people are moving back from the suburbs into the city. Outside of SE D.C., it's pretty safe for a large city.

Still not the safest city in the world, but nowhere to be ranked in with Atlanta, New Orleans or Detroit anymore.

New York is safe, all things considered.

I've had a total of 2 incidents in nearly 18 years.

I'd say the odds are pretty good.....

Of all the major cities in the rust belt/Midwest, I'd have to say that I would feel safest living in Pittsburgh. On the east coast, probably Boston. I haven't been to all the southern cities, but of the ones I have visited, Charlotte seemed to be the safest. At least the parts I was in.
