In Upstate NY, districts known for having relatively high Jewish student population take the day off for Jewish holidays. So, it depends on the town/neighborhood/school district. In my area, that means the East Side and the Eastern suburbs.

That's funny, when I went to public school in the Bronx there was a lot higher than 2% Jewish population in my elementary school, middle and high school.
If you also try to fool yourself that spring break and winter break are not those times of year mostly due to the influence of Easter and Christmas then you are only fooling yourself.

Why are U.S. public schools closed for Jewish holidays, when only around 2% of U.S. population are Jewish? Now I have to take off from work and use my "sick" days to stay home with the kids

Jewish students/teachers should take off from school by their own, and not make everyone else be off and force us parents' to take off from work when we don't celebrate the holidays.

Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against any Jewish people, but it should be fair to all other religions and nationalities.

For example Christians only get Good Friday off, which is 1 day of school calender, while Jews have 3-4 holidays on calender. All other religions have none at all. And no, students are not off for "Christmas Break, or Easter Break". Why aren't schools closed on Easter Monday, Ephipany, Eid and Chinese New Year then?!

Thanks for me and God Bless!
Easter Monday isn't a holiday. The holiday is on Sunday. You get Christmas off and Chinese or New Year isn't a religion. Do you get Epiphany off from work? Probably not so you'd have the same problem. And, US public schools aren't all closed for Jewish Holidays. The world doesn't revolve around you.

The percentage of Jews nationwide is irrelevant. The NYC metropolitan area nearly has around 1/3rd of the nations Jewish population, if I remember correctly.

I just think its funny how a Mom presumes in her OP what's done in her children's school in NYC is done the same nationally.

What do you do with your kids during the summer, February Vacation, April Vacation, and the days that schools close early for professional days? Schools are not only closed on holidays.

It doesn't matter because those are not cause by the Jews, she is only concerned with days off the Jews caused.

This comment pretty much sums up the lack of credence of your entire rant.

In Chicago a lot of the suburban public schools were closed. The reasoning was that not only were so many students Jewish, but the teachers as well. The school districts stated that it would cost them more to remain open on those days because of paying all the substitute teachers and having to remain open an extra day to make up the holidays. The same holds true in NY, Philly, LA, Boston. I think it's more for the teachers and financial considerations than the students.

The only reason winter break is when it is comes from the fact that Christmas is that time.

FYI, most Jewish students go to public school, not private.
