I'm originally from NY (Hudson Valley) the obvious similarity to my home region would be Connecticut, New Jersey, Western Mass and South Western VT.
As a State, Virginia is probably the closest in regional/demographic divisions and Geography.
And Although California is much more extreme in geography, is is also very close to NY. Orange County is like Long Island with palm trees and no winter. Napa/Sonoma remind me a lot of the Hudson Valley. LA and SF have many of the same amenities of NYC.
I would think that Napa/Sonoma would be like the Finger Lakes.
Texas. The state is not really like any other by any obvious measure though parts of the state are probably more like neighboring areas. East Texas - Louisiana, North Texas - Oklahoma, South Texas - Mexico, West Texas - New Mexico, Central Texas - Tennessee perhaps?
As a whole Texas is probably most similar to New York City in the following ways - Intense amount of pride that is difficult for non-locals to stomach, Diverse Culture different from others, An important part of the U.S. economy, etc.
I would think that Napa/Sonoma would be like the Finger Lakes.
The finger lakes region also seem a bit like the Hudson Valley. I was in St. Helena a few months ago and was amazed how similar Napa looked like Hyde Park, NY. _ they even have a Culinary Institute of America!
North Florida resembles neighboring GA. Central Florida resembles nowhere in particular, maybe parts of GA. South Florida resembles absolutely nowhere in the US. Texas resembles not so many places except neighboring areas.NC resembles VA, SC, TN, GA.
Northernmost DE is like Eastern PA. Hilly, old, rowhomey, dirty. Maybe North Jersey, or a hillier part of the Baltimore area.
South of Rte. 273 is like Maryland, South Jersey, maybe half of the coastal south - flat, wide, slower, farmy, unattached housing, trailors, unimpressive, (except for the beaches.)
I cant think of any place in the US that resembles central Florida.
As for my home state Ohio I would say Pennsylvania, Maryland and Michigan. Perhaps Indiana but Indiana probably is closer to Illinois in many ways.
