My husband and I are looking to move to a place more affordable then San Diego CA. Here's what we're looking for in a city. Any suggestions would be great!

  • Long tolerable summers. Our ideal place would be sunny most days out of the year, have short winters, and not extremely hot or humid in the summer.
  • Plenty of Forests, Lakes and Rivers and in a state that has Mountains. We're big on camping, boating and snowboarding in the winter
  • A high quality of living for an income of around $150K per year. Our jobs and income would stay the same
  • in or near a College town
  • Abundance of young families and a good place to raise our newborn daughter

Seems like you guys should remain in California given that criteria. Have you looked into San Luis Obispo? Haven't been there but from what I've read and seen, seems like you guys should give it a look.

Ditto. There's only one california. Look at Albuquerque but be prepared to compromise.

I know...sounds like CA would fit the bill perfectly but here in San Diego it's not. Ill check out Albuquerque. I've heard great things about San Luis Obispo but the cost of living is high. I love CA but there's so little rivers and lakes in our area. I need to get out of the desert but also need a place that wont rain or have long winters.

Salt Lake City. Boise. Yes, it's desert-y, but the mountains with the trees are nearby and lots of water around.

Perhaps worth considering: Knoxville or Chattanooga TN... Asheville, NC. But I'm not sure how much humidity is too much.

Those places are ruled out because they don't have long summers or short winters.

It's really hard to get a place that's not a desert that gets no rain.

My answer: Ellensburg, WA.

lol very true David. Sorry, my sentence wasn't compleat before i posted it. I mean wont rain for many consecutive days/months. I'm from Portland OR origionally but had to leave due to the rain and grayness. Sometimes it would rain for 35 days straight!

Lubbock might work except it's severly lacking in the outdoor activities department. I would suggest Austin, but the summers are pretty brutal. However, not many cities can claim multiple rock climbing spots, springs, and legitimate mountain biking within city limits.

Denver is another possibility.
