The federal government gave Michigan the Upper Peninsula as a consolation prize to end the Michigan-Ohio War of 1835-36 when Ohio and Michigan were fighting over a strip of land along the border between those two states. Michigan got the UP, rich in natural resources such as timber and iron ore, not to mention gorgeous scenery and access to Lake Superior, and Ohio got Toledo. LOL, I guess Michigan won that one.
Actually, Michigan originally included all of what is now Wisconsin. Wisconsin then started to develop from the south, assumed separate territorial status, and expanded only as far as the present border with the UP, leaving the northward part to remain within Michigan.
LMAO! I never noticed that little piece but it's kind of like Ewan McGregor.
Idaho, WV, Florida and Maryland look real awkward.
