Default best cities in northeast region with reasonable cost of living, jobs and good schools

Can someone suggest a place with reasonable cost of living, good job opportunities, good schools(doesn't have to excellent) and less than 1 hour commute in northeast region. We are looking to buy a home and settle in northeast as most of our family is there. Me and my wife both work in IT(information technology) jobs.

reasonable cost of living - ~350K - ~400K for a newer single family(~2000sq ft, < 10 yrs old) with yard and ~6K property tax. Is there any place in northeast that fit's the above criteria?

Look at the Research Triangle area of NC. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill
The area meets all your requirements. While unemployment isn't stellar, employment is stronger than both the State and national averages.

With the taxes, it is before reductions. So, it should be less.

You may want to look in the Philly metro - less expensive than most other NE metros, especially large ones and many IT jobs though like most places in the US the job market is not as good today as it was a few years ago.

There are many area in the metro that would fit your desires and price points

Perhaps Pittsburgh, Rochester, Buffalo and Harrisburg might work too.

You might check out Danbury, Connecticut as it's within an hour's drive of the NYC metro, Northern New Jersey and I-95 Corridor job centers. Home prices fit your budget as well as property taxes, and it's pretty centrally located in the Northeast. Danbury is the last stop on MTA's Metro North Commuter Rail which serves the big corporate park area in Stamford as well as on into NYC. It's just over an hour to Stamford via train and two hours into Grand Central in NYC. It might be worth the NYC paycheck to check it out. Good luck!

Consider Baltimore county. The burbs outside the city itself have decent schools, moderate housing prices and taxes, and you're in commuting distance to Washington DC's strong job market as well as Baltimore depending on where you live exactly.
