You're right. Ya know, I have seen it spelled both ways though.

Unfortunately some people see us as backwards hicks.

Many people apparently think my area is the Arctic Circle.

It's not the Arctic, it's New England :)

I realize that not everyone will always agree or be happy with your answers here, but I know this post was a lighthearted one and not meant to hurt anyone, but to share common stereotypes of our areas. One of the stereotypes of California is that we have people of mexican heritage along with blondes and lots of plastic surgery. I just had a point taken by someone that called me a racist because of this. If I offended anyone I am sorry..that was not my intention. I suppose anyone could be offended by some of the answers given here but hopefully most will take this as the light hearted topic it was meant to be...I am assuming?

Things people think that aren't necessarily true:

Everyone in Texas loves George Bush
We have a ton of cowboys
Many people own a ranch, ranching equipment, or bale hay for a living
Everyone wears cowboy hats and boots
Everyone only eats meat and there is no such thing as a Texan vegetarian
Everyone goes to church at least twice a week

Things people think that are true, or tend to be:

Everything's bigger in Texas
A lot of people have thick accents
Those Texans think their state is so great
High school football on Friday nights is a big deal
They say things like "Bless your heart!" while they smile at you, and it's meant to be an insult sometimes
There is a Dallas/Houston rivalry

Are either union loving blue-collar democrats or bible-thumping republicans
We don't need no edjumacation, we don't need no thought control.
Praise be to God, and his righteous unionized guitar players.

One of my favorite Ohio politicians (ok, my only favorite Ohio politico) is Dennis Kucinich. He wants to unionize all the cows. Bring the troops home, so they can watch Buckeye football.

I'm from WV.... gee we have these stereotypes

coal - everyone thinks there coal mines EVERYWHERE! Not True
rednecks - We have some, not everyone is though or has that accent
mountains.... Yep, we have those
trees.... Yep, we have these everywhere too
umm, old people maybe?

I just know WV gets the redneck stereotype a lot... Whatever, its cool. I'm not one personally and my friends and family aren't either.
