Lol, you asked, "which states are northern?" And so I indicated where the north ends. Surely there is a transition, so the places on or under the band (like northern parts of W.V. or Md.) may not be southern (though most places completely under the band are IMO). Refer to how I said "questionably northern states are questionable for a reason" - I meant that while some consider these places out of the south, I wouldn't put them in the north.
I would say every state on the poll except for Kansas and Missouri. Missouri is a solid midwestern state however on the south borders Arkansas, which is a solid southern state.
Kansas is also not northern to me because it is smack dab in the center of the country, which is not northern.

I didn't ask that...
In fact I'm not really sure you understood the nature of my reply?
If you're along or north of U.S. 50, then you're in the North, period. If you're along or south of U.S. 60, then you're in the South, period. This applies to everywhere east of U.S. 75.
25 to 35 percent of those polled don't believe Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and the Dakotas are part of the north. I think our geography skills are concerning when far northern states like these are not universally considered northern. Sadly there was a similar thread showing some people don't consider Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia etc are not part of the south. Very sad, basic geography we are failing at. No wonder the world laughs at our geography skills, some of us don't know our own country.

That is true, but the US is fairly far south in latitude compared to Canada and the vast majority of Europe. The sun angle is far too strong for most of the year my personal preferences south of 42-43N latitude.
What seems so strange to me is that Minnesota, which is geographically the northernmost state among the lower 48, is coming in eleventh in the voting! I guess geography isn't a strong point for a great many people.

Same here. Northern MN is well known as the "ice box" of the lower 48.
International Falls....Warroad.....very nippy long winters.
Maine is in second place in my mind.
Michigan's UP is very northern.
Wisconsin, very northern for not bordering Canada
North Dakota too is very northern.
And my personal fave of the bunch, Vermont...northern for sure.
