I am a responsible, educated, articulate native Mississippian working in the IT field. I hold conservative views but the Personhood Amendment, as written, would not get my vote. I am not racist and hold no ill feelings toward anyone.

How am I setting myself up for ridicule? Why do some people from other states still assume I am a racist hick, just because i am from Mississippi?

Keep in mind, there have been a number of states that have had a push for Personhood. Were they ridiculed? The Personhood push failed in Mississippi, just like it has elsewhere.

What about the judge in Ohio who had the 10 Commandments hanging in his courtroom?

https://www.google.com/search?q=10+c...ient=firefox-a

That wasn't Mississippi. What about Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, and Florida? All those states have had 10 Commandments in the courts.

Most of us have adequate education. The Mississippi delta is a very economically depressed area of our state that pulls many of our rankings down, but it is only one area.

Many very intelligent people hail from Mississippi, but many of those people leave for better opportunity. There are still many intelligent people living in Mississippi. Couple outward migration with the situation in the delta and we have what we have, but don't assume all Mississippians are dumb.

I invite you to visit Mississippi. Outside of the delta, it isn't so bad.

When adjusted median household income is taken into account, the 10 poorest states (DC included) are scattered throughout the Northeast, South, and West.

42. New York
43. New Mexico
44. Vermont
45. Montana
46. Arkansas
47. Washington, DC
48. Mississippi
49. Hawaii
50. West Virginia
51. Maine

Among all the bashing of Alabama and Mississippi, I'm suprised this stat went by without comment. When adjusted income is taken into account, Alabama actually ranks 37th in income ahead of even New York. This is the most logical and practical way to measure income too considering it takes into account real life cost of living factors in various areas.

As if this thread was bizarre enough, psulion2007 took the thread into the twilight zone with incredibly weird "Alabama can't hang with Mississippi in anything" rant. Not only is that notion wildly bizarre, it isn't true. Since Mississippi and Alabama are being discussed and you brought it up, the two states should be compared. The ONLY 3 things I'd give Mississippi over Alabama from my extensive time in both areas are:

1) Musical heritage - The live music and acts produced by both states are pretty even but MS does have an amazing musical heritage particularly as the birthplace of the blues.

2) Casinos - This is literally the only tangible thing I'm envious of Mississippi about as an Alabamian. They are a fun diversion from time to time.

3) 4 lane highway system - I do like the way Mississippi designed their non-interstate 4 lane highway system with limited access and the fact that they bypass towns. Many of Alabama's 4 lane highways merge with and go through the heart of town thereby slowing commutes and getting you caught up in local traffic.

Other than these 3 things, Alabama is marginally, but still comfortably better than Mississippi. B'ham has had as many as 7 Fortune 500 headquarters as recently as 2002 which is remarkable considering at that time they had as many headquarters as MUCH larger metro areas. Huntsville's was recently rated the 9th smartest city in the WORLD by Forbes. Mississippi doesn't have a city even remotely as high tech as Huntsville which was the original home of NASA and has the 2nd largest research park in America (behind only the Research Triangle) and 4th largest in the world. UAB raises more NIH research funding than all Mississippi and Louisiana based colleges and universities COMBINED. Mississippi has no equivalent nor does Louisiana for that matter. Mississippi does have some fine restaurants even in the smaller towns (particularly places like Oxford, Biloxi, and Natchez). Bham has quite a few James Beard nominated restaurants as well. Alabama has a better collections of public golf courses than Mississippi although the golf course developments by the casinos have greatly improved the golf course collection in Mississippi. Alabama also has one of the very few viable beach destinations on the Gulf Coast outside of Florida between Florida and South Padre Island, TX. I realize Galveston, TX is a beach destination but it in and of itself is more of a regular city and a day trip for Houstonians more so than the other places which routinely draw from all over the country. Mississippi's beaches are average at best and draw a tiny fraction of what Gulf Shores, AL draws. The casinos saved Biloxi as a destination.

In short, I have to take some exception with a couple of the Louisiana posters here. I have family in the New Orleans area and absolutely love visiting the city and that area. Having said that, Louisiana isn't any better overall than either Alabama or Mississippi. In fact, it usually ranks below Alabama in most quality of life measures and even before Katrina Alabama was growing at a significantly higher rate than Louisiana. Alabama has plenty of faults but the psulion2007's rants on the state are laughable.

P.S. I don't want to come off as saying I don't like Mississippi btw so don't take my comments the wrong way. In fact, everyone I've ever personally met who was from Mississippi was really cool. I don't know that I can honestly say that about meeting people from any other state. I just think psulion2007's portrayal of Mississippi as this uber cool hip place with tons to offer while Alabama had nothing to offer was ridiculous and that's mainly what I was responding to.

What is so bad about Mississippi and Alabama? Nothing, in my opinion. They are two fine states.

I understand you may be more liberally inclined, and you may not like the fact that these two states are filled with a lot of conservative, religious people, but so what! Why does that make it a bad state? Why does that justify you bringing it up for ridicule in threads that having nothing to do with the state?

It's about time that people got with the times and realized that both of these states are wonderful, beautiful states filled with great people.
I am moving to Mississippi from Massachusetts in a month and could not be more excited. No more snow, Nor'Easters, and sub-zero cold for 6 months. I was born in Texas so I am very excited to move to Mississippi and am looking forward to meeting the people and living a different lifestyle than here in the North.

Wow...if I am interpreting this right, then you are a big jerk for making a general statement like that. There are many fine colleges and schools in the south that are attended by SOUTHERNERS! I was born in the south and have already proved my IQ is bigger than yours.

The South has bear the stain of anti Black racism forever but progressive Northern/ Western states are forgiven for the acts of genocide they committed against Native Americans.... acts like the lynching of 29 Indians in Mankato Minnesota, the Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado, etc

New England won't be sad to see you go. Trust me. They don't shed any tears over the gutless running away.

SMH at "define innocent." What the U.S. did to native Indians was completely without justification and just plain evil.

Not being found guilty in a court of law " having some of yours peers on the jury " yes and the standard of justice demands overwhelming evidents against them to prove thwm guilty.

Good post!

Sometimes I think we are the two most hated states in this country. It's like when someone mention about those two states, most folks rather say something negative than positive. You know why? I blame it on the statistics, stereotypes, and the media. Alabama and Mississippi is like a brother and sister who have a rough past that is striving for a better future. What's so funny is that some folks would believe what other folks say about these two states but they aren't doing their own research.
