How come USA don't celebrate Boxing Day/Day after Christmas Day (Dec 26) like most of Europe, Canada and many more countries?

I don't know about Europe, but in Canada most stores are open on Boxing Day.

What the hell is Boxing Day exactly anyway? Always saw it was a Canadian holiday on the calendar growing up but never had a clue what it actually was.

Isn't Boxing Day basically for more shopping? Pretty much the last thing I want to do the day after Christmas...

Boxing Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I didn't know what it was either until I read the link. Basically it is similar to our "Day After Thanksgiving", with lots of sales at stores. Basically it seems like it's a big bank holiday/excuse to shop.

The US probably doesn't recognize it since we aren't part of the Commonwealth.

Boxing Day didn't exist until nearly 100 years after the States declared independence from Britain. It is chiefly a British holiday observed by nations that remained subject to the crown.

Other European countries do not observe Boxing Day.

I've always thought it was weird that while the UK and Canada have Dec 26th as a federal holiday, it isn't here in the USA. I think they just should since most people don't work that day anyway and make it official.
