The closest Waffle House to me is in Toledo, Ohio. They shouldn't tease me with such distances.
I have relatives down south in Mississippi and sometimes half the reason I travel down there is for Waffle House. The other reason is for the beautiful scenery and climate, and then maybe a little bit for for actually wanting to see relatives.
My wife and my cardiologist only allow one trip a year, but it's almost as if to a shrine. Hash browns, well-done, the endless cup of steaming joe, crisp bacon, and waffles. It's patently unhealthy, but who the hell cares?
But the best part of the place? The floor show, aka the banter between waitresses and the regulars. Holy mackerel, that's good entertainment.
I have never eaten at one. It says Florida has over 100 of them but ironically I have never seen one in the Miami area. They do seem to be all over Orlando though.
I was in Florida with my family and another couple with my parents made us stop at a Waffle House. They were all excited about it, we had never heard of the place. I guess we went to a bad one, cause we were all pretty disgusted. Dirty restaurant, the staff didn't really care and the food was buckets of grease everywhere.
Obviously a lot of people like them! I had a terrible impression, but I suppose I should try again next time I'm down there? It all just seemed so greasy and unhealthy.
No, that's just Waffle House's deal. They're dirty as hell and aren't afraid to show it. It's grimy and dirty and delicious.
The next time you're down there, try it again...just know you're going to a greasy spoon. It's going to be unhealthy. It's going to be greasy. It's going to be fantastic.
I've never been to a Waffle House, and somehow I've survived.
You are not missing anything. They are cheap but as the saying goes...you get what you pay for.
Thankfully my state is still WH free. I used to joke that with WH moving northward and Tim Hortons expanding, they would eventually meet up. I think that actually happened somewhere in Ohio a few years ago. Ironically, where I work in Ohio they are only about .2 miles apart.

Well, this is about as good proof as any that the Waffle House now extends beyond the south, but only into the states that border it (MO, IN, OH)...Illinois really I don't think should count because I know one of those two waffle houses is in the St. Louis metro area. I would suspect the other one is as well. I'm kind of shocked that Ohio has so many.

P.S. Get hammered before going.
Or stoned.
