The elementary school i went to in SF was probably around 40% hispanic, 30% black, and the rest comprised of asian and white people. Nowadays, it seems to be at least 50% white, going by the kids i see in the school yard. If i went by the pictures on it's website, I would think it was 90% white though...guess that's what happens though when a neighborhood yuppifies.
Schooldigger is one of my favorite sites. It's been a major help in finding out demographics trends in major cities. I was surprised when I found out that South Jackson schools were mostly white 20 years ago and that even some Detroit schools, mostly on the far West Side and around the Hoover area on the East Side, had a large white minority in the early 90s.

I remember in upper elementary there were a few kids from Mexico and El Salvador who were recent immigrants. I thought it was so cool. There was also a girl from China who didn't know English. My best friend was from Puerto Rico. I noticed I never really made friends with other white kids--they were mostly the minorities in the school. I found it interesting and also felt bad that no one talked to them.
My elementary's hispanic percentage has risen, but white has stayed the same. It's about 85% white.
Now for the school I teach at in the south Bronx, the statistics are interesting. As of few years ago, there were many Africans moving in. The number has gone way down. There were like 5-6 white kids in our k-5 elementary about 5 years ago, now there's none. I can't blame them, they're definitely the minority in this area lol.
Lots of "Hispanics" at your school, Rachael. Is that a Newyorican area? For some reason I thought where you taught was a heavily African-American area.
