I researched cities across the country that would suit my needs and work for me. I made my move. So I was seven years older than when I first thought of the idea. I figured as long as I wasn't dead, relocation would always be a possibility. You don't have to wait that long of course. Everyone's circumstances are different. But no, 28 is not too old. One is never too old to relocate to a new city. Age has nothing to do with it.

Go take a look at the Retirement Forum on CD. There are plenty of senior citizens talking about relocation. They are certainly many years older than age 28. That might encourage you to make your move.
You're comparing a 28 year old to a retiree?? I have to laugh.

A retiree is in a completely different place in life than a working 28 year old (now I'm 30).

If you're gay and do accounting then why not Boston? There have to be a ton of financial jobs there and the city is liberal enough to not give you a hard time about being gay.

No it wouldn't. I currently live in Fairfield County, CT, which has even higher cost of living than Boston. If anything, my salary would stay the same at best. Plus, Boston is way too urban and congested. I want suburbia.

It is a good idea when thinking about relocation to take a less narrow minded approach.

I think the OP is talking about the idea of moving period, stages of life and the position he is in besides age. I brought up the age factor because that did seem to be an important fact factor.

When I decided that Portland was becoming a city that was no longer for me, age had nothing to do with my plans to relocate. I planned to continue to work in a new city. The fact that I wound up being unable to do that had no bearing on the situation. I had no choice but to "retire," that is, quit work because I became disabled.

I suggested that the OP look at the retirement forum just from the standpoint of the fact that people move all the time at all ages. Some of the people there move to other cities for various reasons and still continue to work some don't. The point is, maybe you will understand this time, age should not be a factor to prevent anyone from relocating if they truly want to especially if they are unhappy in their the place they presently live.

I'm sort of considering some of the rust belt / Midwestern cities, such as Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, etc. They are very affordable, have jobs and pretty big gay communities.

Cleveland just hosted the Gay Games...international event held every four years. Next host is Paris 201...previous hosts were San Francisco, Vancouver, New York City, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago, and Cologne.

Perhaps the "etc" includes Cleveland as well?
