No need to nitpick but consider any city that's smaller than the largest city in the metropolitan area as a "suburb".

i.e. Long Beach, Anaheim, Pasadena are suburbs of Los Angeles
i.e. Berkeley, Oakland, Walnut Creek suburbs of San Francisco
i.e. Ann Arbor, Pontiac, Warren suburbs of Detroit

Anyways, here are some of my picks:

Davis, CA
Mountain View, CA
Orange, CA
Claremont, CA

Please add to the list, preferably with cities outside of California and not just college towns.

Really depends. What aspects are looking for as a business center, place to live, place to enjoy, combination of these

This could go many ways, there are old towns all over the Northest in the burbs wth tremendous DTs (most smaller) and great history, arts, eclecticness, restaurants etc.

ahve always personally loved Doylestown PA or New Hope PA but both could be conisedered a little rustic in their own way

Tarrytown NY, Montclair NJ, and Cambridge MA are my cup of tea. For what I consider suburban anyway.

Out of the ones I've been to Santa Monica, CA; Hoboken, NJ; Bethesda, MD; Berkeley, CA

I'd also probably like Oak Park, IL; Naperville, IL; Bellevue, WA; White Plains, NY; and Pasadena, CA
