If you look up American cities with the most bars per capita, you're bound to find most cities listed at least once (i.e. there has been no reliable research and/or it's just too hard to tell). What cities that you've been to have a lot of neighborhood bars? Not sports bars, not expensive clubs where only the "finest" are seen, not dance halls, but little places in residential or small commercial districts that tend to attract people from the area?

It may seem like natural instinct to say that any decent-sized city will fit this bill, but in my opinion, it's not true. In the three places I've lived, New Orleans fits the bill well, Richmond doesn't much at all (I find that it has relatively few bars for a city its size, and most of them are in the Shockoe Bottom district and generally attract the yuppie Friday-night-out crowd), and Philadelphia falls somewhere in between (South Philly has quite a few of these places, but the rest of the city...not as much).

I would also say Chicago (which could give the other two a run for their money).

Boston...as many neighborhood bars as there are neighborhood coffeeshops in Seattle/San Francisco.

I've heard Chicago and Milwaukee are towards the tops as far as neighborhood bars.

This site lists 451 bars from around downtown Chicago up through the north side. That's around 20 bars per square mile. Honestly though I just thought of 8 other bars that aren't on the list - so I'm thinking it's far from complete since I don't have THAT big a number of bars I know of...

edit: I know there are 41 gay bars on the north side of the city, and this only lists about 12. They need to do their homework!

Milwaukee, some of the bars are in the middle of the block and a lot of the corner bars in town have residents above the bar or use to be houses

You can't get much more neighborhood then that bar, it looks exactly like a house
