Does anyone have any opinions on Western Massachusetts? What about upper-southern California?
I'm primarily a Midwestern girl at heart but this isn't about me, so I'll go anywhere for the kids, but once we're there, we're there, you know? Settled... I'm never moving while our children are young again once we settle somewhere.
I always had a dream of getting a good place with a bunch of land that the kids all put up houses around with their own families one day, almost like a family estate...but I'm ok if we just get something with a yard.
(Anyone else ever wish they had their own town? lol...)
Modest. I would like a modest home. I don't need granite countertops or a professionally landscaped yard. But enough room for my kids, maybe a little extra room in case I have to take in any parents as they age (and this is seeming a very good possibility), and a decent yard (we have a half-acre now, it's pretty cool.) And I must have a walk-in pantry, because I grew up in an old neighborhood where people had pantries instead of cabinets, and it makes SO much more sense. I hate cabinets.
Oh, I'm more lost than ever...I really don't know what is going to be the thing that helps me decide...I don't want to move my family where they won't be happy. How do you really know if someplace is right for you? How do I know whether I'm missing something?

You to think about or ask your family what they are looking for or what do they prefer in a new community. Do they want something similar or something totally different? A small town, bigger city, sububs....? Things like that.

One of the leading criteria for most is climate. Warm or cold, four distinct seasons or four milder seasons, is lots of sun necessary or primarily overcast okay, lots of snow/moderate snow or no snow and so on...I would determine your desire here first as weather tends to dictate overall happiness for most.
