I think it's about $40-50 in my county, but I don't own a car so I'm not 100% certain. There's also sales tax if you want to factor that in. Where I lived in TN it was $80 for the tags, $10 for the emissions inspection, plus sales tax (nearly 10%) if you had just purchased the car. But $90 during a normal year.

New Hampshire: just registered my 2012 VW Routan minivan today and it cost me $715 ($66 to the state and $649 to the town). Inspection will probably be $60. Thank god NH doesn't have a sales tax

In Iowa, I pay $165.00 per year for my 2007 Corolla, and $84.00 for a 2002 Saturn.

Most posters are talking about what they have to pay if the car is new or being plated first time. That can include a title transfer fee and various taxes including the state sales tax and in some states, an annual personal property tax, all of which can add up to thousands of dollars. I think the OP is talking about how much each year to renew the plates on a car that is already registered.

In Michigan, for example, that is around $70.

In most States, vehicle registration has nothing to do with sales tax. States with a sales tax will obviously increase the final cost of the vehicle.

Registration costs are a different animal. Some are high (WA State used to high, until voters repealed much of it). Some are low. Idaho, where I live, is somewhere in between. About $58 for one year, despite the age of your car, with a savings if your renewel is longer.
