Kansas City. Huge Art Scene, New perfomring arts center. Google is installing super fast internet, great food scene, steady job market, cheap COL with some great/trendy hoods. Anthony Bourdain just filmed a KC episode for No Reservations. KC is also in a ton of travel website/magazine lists for must visit places in 2012.

Buffalo. I think its poised to make a Pittsburgh like renaissance. Its super cheap, in a better location than Pittsburgh in that it is closer to a major world city (Toronto) and a Great lake, and also has major league sports teams. I think this economy is being reset to the point that the only places that people can afford to live well are places in the rustbelt.

Yes, Detroit, with it's declining population, extreme crime problem, disturbing murder rate, abandoned buildings, high unemployment, failed schools, piles of trash, arson fires, drugs, corruption . . . will undoubtedly be the next trendy city.

wow nice one.
I actually can see Detroit improving and being a pretty trendy city, Downtown is already a spot where you can spot a few hipsters. Whats the status on the proposed light rail? that could help bring in the young professionals to the city
