People went as far as calling me a Yankee, telling me to go home ect.. I'm not sure if this still occurs in the magnitude I experienced, but if you knew of maybe a more progressive city in the south, maybe the same or similar attitude as a city like Portland, Oregon, or Seattle? We are very willing to give the south a try, especially seeing how cheap the rents are. I just would hate for my wife to experience the same south vs the world mentality I experienced. Any suggestions which cities/states might be the best direction? thank you again.
Cities like Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas are filled to the brim with people from all over the country and the world. They're not as liberal as Portland or Seattle, but the atmospheres are very live and let live, and no one really bats an eye at anyone who is different. You'd be fine.

I had a one bedroom, all bills paid for $650 in east dallas two years ago. safe neighborhood (my place was old though). Also had a studio off Oaklawn and Lemmon in Dallas (GREAT neighborhood) for $500 all bills paid in 2006. I'm sure rent has risen over there though. I'm what you would consider different (covered in tattoos, not a Christian, into punk, etc) and Dallas (and pretty much all large southern cities) was very accepting

Atlanta has pretty cheap housing and a $500 studio in a safe area is a pipe dream. Don't even think about a 1BR. A $500 a month apartment of any size, let alone a studio gets you either some where very very far out in metro Atlanta, or an intown apartment that will more than likely be in the hood typical hood stuff going on which usually aint safe.

I found these without even trying:

It looks like most are ITP, and for around or over $500/mo. At first glance, I'd say most are in pretty safe areas.
